How to Select a Reverse Sensor for Your Truck

20

Safety should be of utmost importance when reversing heavy vehicles such as trucks and one such feature that comes in very useful is a reverse sensor system. This is also called a parking sensor and it will detect individuals, objects and obstacles that are behind the vehicle when it is reversing. And the sensor system will issue an alert to the driver.

There are different truck reversing systems on the market such as electromagnet sensors, ultrasonic sensors etc. In an electromagnetic sensor, electromagnetic fields are used to detect objects while an ultrasonic sensor uses sound waves. The most commonly used system is ultrasonic sensor systems as this is an affordable option. And they can offer reliable performance as well. However, if you are going for an electromagnetic sensor, you can use it in trucks that have metal bumpers without having to drill a hole in it. Think about your preferences and what your requirements are when it comes to the truck. One important characteristic that people consider when choosing a reverse sensor is its detection range. There has to be an adequate range of detection that will match the dimensions of the truck. If you have a larger truck, it is best to select a sensor that has a longer detection range so that broad coverage is achieved.

Consider where you need to install the sensors and the number of sensors required.

The common numbers tend to be two or four sensors. In smaller trucks, two sensors will be sufficient but you may need to consider using four sensors if you have a larger truck. And consider where to place these strategically so that they provide sufficient coverage and help to detect objects that are at different heights. Placing them properly will increase the performance of the sensors. And there are also different alert systems provided by the sensor systems such as visual indicators, audible alerts and some tend to provide both. Choose what you can easily understand without being distracted. Sometimes trucks tend to be noisy and an audible alert that sounds over the noise will grab the attention of the driver.

There are also sensors

That come with a separate display providing the driver with additional details such as the location of the obstacle detected by the sensor and how much distance is there to the object. So if you think a display is more useful consider whether you are going for a display integrated to the rear-view mirror or mounted to the dashboard. There have to be easy to operate controls so that you can adjust the settings to understand the details better. Consider the durability of the sensor as well. You will need to select a sensor that can withstand different weather conditions. And trucks tend to traverse rough terrain so the sensor should be equipped for that. You can read customer reviews to get a better understanding of the workings of the sensor and whether it is the right one for you.
